Lots of Snow in Mid-Michigan

January 26, 2004 - By Aaron Kerr

After growing up in South Carolina, where a good snow was a rare treat, I (Aaron) have never gotten over loving snow. But the weather of the last few years has usually failed to deliver. It seems like there’s been a habit of actual snowfalls falling short of predictions. A predicted snowfall of 5-8 inches has usually brought only 2-3 inches in the past few years. But so far, this winter is different.

We’ve had at least 7 or 8 inches of snow on the ground for the past week and a half–a result of a couple really nice storms that came through town. The temperature has been exceptionally cold as well. It hasn’t been above freezing in around 3 weeks. And we’ve set some record lows for this area. Yesterday morning when I got up for church, it was around 10 below zero.

Right now, we’re on the front edge of another good snow storm that is expected to yield 6-10 inches here by late tomorrow night. I’m hoping that it delivers! One of the nice things about web design and administration is that a lot of it can be done from anywhere. So if the snow is too much for driving, I’ll stay at home in my office tomorrow and get some work done from there. It also helps to have a very understanding boss.

The hardest thing about the cold, snowy weather is that it makes it difficult for Jen to get out of the house for walks or errands. She’s not a big fan of driving in snow, and slipping around on icy sidewalks when you’re pregnant is no one’s idea of a good time. I’d like to find a good deal on a treadmill at some point so she could keep up some activity here at home. As it is, she pushes things against the walls in our living room and uses it as a mini dance studio for some great exercise.

The cats seem to like looking at the snow, but they don’t like being in it. I took them outside after our deep snowfall. Boo Boo just sat there and looked scared, afraid to move. Yogi ran under the porch and had to be coaxed out with kitty treats.

That’s all for now. I’m off to eat a great dinner and then shovel our sidewalks.
