Our First Nursery

February 13, 2004 - By Aaron Kerr

As May 23rd, approaches, we’re starting to put in more time converting our office upstairs into a new nursery for our baby girl. We moved our office to our 3rd bedroom downstairs a few weeks ago, but now the real work on the nursery has begun.

Our upstairs room was in pretty good shape, but just not quite cozy enough for a baby. The largest product will be getting new carpet in. Our old carpet was in fair shape, but it had been laid down without any padding. Not too bad for walking on, but who wants to let a newborn play on a hard floor. So one night this week, Jen and I finished moving the last few things out of that room. I then pried up a corner and managed to pull the entire carpet up.

What I found underneath was hardwood that had been painted green at some point. If we wanted to go through the hassle of stripping, refinishing, and buffing the floor, we could probably have a pretty nice wood floor. But that sounds like a lot of hard work–and carpet is nice for a baby anyway. One of my close friends, Josh Hook, installs carpet. We’re going to pick out something nice and have him help us install it.

After that, it’s time to some nail holes in the wall and then apply a new paint job. We’re leaning toward either light green or light blue. The nursery pattern we are going to use is called Snuggle Bugs, by Kidsline, Inc. You can see a picture here. I’ll also put up the wallpaper border that you can see in the picture. It seems like a nice decorating theme that will work equally well for a boy or girl. Since we plan on using this nursery for more babies in the future, this is a necessity.

All in all, this shouldn’t be too huge of a project. I think finishing it will really start to make the whole “WE’RE HAVING A BABY” thing more real. Not that it isn’t real now, but I still think there are times that we just don’t quite grasp what an amazing change this will be for us. Until you’ve been through it yourself, it still seems a little hard to believe that this is actually where babies come from. 🙂
